Horsetooth

Sun Rays In The Rockies

This was actually taken back in September before moving to Colorado. This is me carrying my boy while hiking up to Horsetooth Mountain. This was during a scouting trip to Fort Collins to ensure that we really did want to move.

Now that we live here and hike all the time, a proper child carrying backpack has made the hiking much easier.

Zoom Zoom!

I've always wanted to try this technique out but never remembered to actually try it while shooting. Recently I remembered and gave it a try. This was my first attempt. What you see is the Cache La Poudre River.

The technique is simple. Just change the zoom on your camera during the exposure. To get smooth lines, start the zoom before you hit the shutter and continue until after the shutter has closed. Slower shutter speeds are obviously best. Experiment to get the right shutter speed and speed of zoom.

I tried out my first set of HDR images at Hewlett Gulch just a few miles from my house recently. I had a lot of fun and will be trying out more HDR images in the future. Check out the whole set here.

Wheel Line

I really like farm equipment, especially if it's old, broken, and abandoned. The pieces you see here are known as a wheel line, when they're actually put together. It's a long line of wheels with sprinklers on the connecting pipes. Simple yet effective.

Electric

Power Switching Station

Power Switching Station

There's a small power switching station near my house. Lots of neat shapes and industrial looking machinery to photograph. I had fun for about 10 minutes before leaving. Knowing the country these days I'd get harassed for taking pictures of infrastructure. I must be a terrorist.

Falling Rocks

Heavy rains lately have caused a lot of mud and rocks to slide down onto the road I live on. The other day I had to wait 30 minutes during my morning commute while tractors cleared giant boulders from the road.

Worn Logs

I really dug the cool texture on the tops of these large log pillars. Decades of getting beat on by the elements means cool photos for me.

Welcome

Standing out on Nymph Lake
This is a place where I'll post some of the images I take on a daily basis while out and about. Places I pass by on my way to and from work. Places I go shopping. Places I go specifically to take photographs.

At left is me snowshoeing in Rocky Mountain National Park, standing out on frozen Nymph Lake. During the weekdays I work for the U.S. Forest Service and I'm a part time portrait photographer running Solley Photography.

I live in the foothills just outside of Fort Collins in northern Colorado. Poudre Canyon and the Cache La Poudre River are what I call home. I love it here. I moved here from Austin, Texas just five months ago and couldn't miss it any less, especially the heat!

If you'd like to see my main blog where you can learn to take people photographs like a pro, check out Sublime Light. Otherwise, enjoy the photos.
